Can mosquitoes go through window mesh? No: even standard screens have 1 mm openings. How mesh helps with dengue prevention in Singapore, and when it fails.
Mosquitoes cannot go through a properly fitted window mesh, because even a standard 18×16 insect screen has openings of roughly 1 mm, smaller than an adult mosquito's body.
The key phrase in that sentence is "properly fitted". The weave itself is close to mosquito-proof, yet plenty of Singapore homes with mesh installed still swat mosquitoes at night. The explanation is almost never the mesh. It's everything around the mesh: gaps, doors, tears, and the mosquitoes that hitch a ride in with you.

Why a mosquito cannot get through the weave
Mesh works on size alone. Standard fibreglass insect screening is woven at about an 18×16 count, meaning 18 strands per inch one way and 16 the other, leaving openings of roughly 1 mm. An adult mosquito's body and wings are larger than that opening, so it physically cannot pass.
Mosquitoes also have no way to cheat. They can't chew through mesh: their mouthpart is a needle for piercing skin, not a jaw for cutting fibre. They can't fold themselves smaller the way a mouse squeezes under a door, because an insect's exoskeleton is rigid. And they can't learn or cooperate their way past a barrier. A mosquito that meets intact mesh will bump against it, drift along it, and eventually leave, unless it finds a gap.
This is worth appreciating for a moment, because it makes mesh unusual among mosquito defences. Repellent wears off. Coils burn out. A mesh screen just sits there, working, every hour of every day. That matters in Singapore specifically because the Aedes mosquitoes that spread dengue bite during the day, not just at dusk. You can't be alert at 3 pm on a work call; your window screen can.
How mosquitoes actually get in: the honest list
If mosquitoes cannot pass through the weave, but you're still getting bitten at home, one of these is happening. We see them all on site visits, so this is field experience, not theory.
Gaps around the frame and grilles. The big one. A mesh panel mounted over or around window grilles can leave channels of several millimetres where the frame meets the grille or the wall. To a mosquito following air currents along a surface, that channel is an open door. Open doors. Sealing every window achieves little if the balcony door stands open through dinner, or the main door faces a corridor where mosquitoes shelter. Doors are the most commonly forgotten entry point, which is why we build mesh doors on the same engineering as our heaviest window model. Tears and lifted corners. Fibreglass mesh that's been through years of sun, or one enthusiastic encounter with a pet, can tear at the corners. A 5 mm tear works exactly like a 5 mm installation gap. Run your eyes around the edges of older mesh once in a while; it takes ten seconds.
They ride in with you. Mosquitoes rest on clothes and bags, follow you into the lift, and slip in as you open the front door. No screen can prevent this, and any company that claims total protection is overselling. What mesh does is stop the far larger population outside from joining them.
They breed inside. The uncomfortable one. Aedes mosquitoes breed in small pools of stagnant water: plant saucers, vase water, a blocked balcony drain. If breeding is happening inside your flat, the mosquitoes never needed to get past your mesh at all. The right mesh specification for Singapore
Standard 18×16 screening stops nearly all mosquitoes, but for Singapore we recommend going tighter: a weave of around 20×20 to 24×24. The extra density buys you two things. It closes the door on the smallest and most determined mosquitoes, and it also blocks beetles and sandflies, which slip through standard screens and bite just as annoyingly.
Does tighter weave mean a stuffy room? Not at these densities. The strands are thin, the open area stays high, and in day-to-day use you won't feel a difference in airflow between 18×16 and 24×24. The specification that actually deserves your attention isn't density at all: it's the seal. A 24×24 weave with a gap at the grille protects you less than an 18×16 weave installed perfectly. How mesh compares with sprays, coils and repellents
These aren't either-or choices, but people often ask which to spend on first. Here's our honest take.

The pattern is clear enough: mesh and breeding-source removal are the two defences that work continuously without you thinking about them, and they attack different parts of the problem. Mesh keeps outdoor mosquitoes outdoors; the Mozzie Wipeout stops indoor breeding. Repellents remain useful for what mesh can't cover, like the playground downstairs or a stroll along the park connector.
During an active dengue cluster near your block, use everything at once. Layers are the whole point: no single defence is complete, including ours.
Protecting the whole home, not just one window
A single meshed window in the living room is a start, but mosquitoes only need one unprotected opening. Think of coverage in three steps.
Bedroom windows come first, since that's where you're stationary and unaware for eight hours a night. The kitchen and service yard follow, because those windows tend to stay open for ventilation the longest. Doors come last on most people's lists but shouldn't: balcony and corridor-facing doors stand open at exactly the times mosquitoes are active.

Do mosquito nets on windows really help against dengue?
Yes, as one layer of a real strategy. Screens on windows and doors reduce the number of Aedes mosquitoes that reach you at home, which lowers bite risk through the daytime hours when they're active. They don't remove the need to clear stagnant water, since Aedes can breed inside your own flat; NEA's dengue guidance treats screens and source removal as partners, and so do we.
What size mesh stops mosquitoes?
Openings of about 1 mm, which is what a standard 18×16 weave gives you, stop nearly all mosquitoes. We recommend 20×20 to 24×24 for Singapore because it also blocks midges and sandflies with no noticeable airflow penalty. Below that density, the weave itself becomes the weak point; above it, you're trading ventilation for nothing.
Can mosquitoes bite through mesh if I sit right against it?
Technically yes: a mosquito's proboscis is longer than the mesh is thick, so skin pressed flat against the weave can be bitten through it. Practically, this only matters for beds or sofas pushed hard against a screened window. Keep a few centimetres of distance and the mesh is effectively bite-proof.
Why do I still hear mosquitoes at night with mesh installed?
Start with the honest list: gaps around grilles and frames, a door left open in the evening, a torn corner, mosquitoes that came in on clothes, or breeding in standing water somewhere in the flat. Check the mesh perimeter and your plant saucers first; those two cover most cases we see on site visits.
