Is Polyester Mesh Strong Enough for Cats? What the Material Can and Can't Do

Polyester has become the material of the moment in Singapore window mesh. It's behind most of the "invisible" mesh products you've seen at fairs and on your feed, including big advertised claims like meshes that hold up to 70 kg.

So cat owners are asking a fair question: is polyester actually strong enough for a cat? The honest answer is that it depends which polyester, because the word covers everything from thin insect screens to heavy engineered weaves, and they are very different products.

Not all polyester mesh is the same grade

"Polyester" describes the fibre, not the strength. What determines how a polyester mesh performs is the strand thickness, the weave density, and whether the strands are coated.

• Standard polyester mesh uses thin strands woven for maximum clarity and airflow. It's a superb insect mesh: highly transparent and breezy. It's what we offer as our polyester mesh option on the Base. Against claws, though, thin strands are the weak point. Repeated scratching wears them down, and one nick can grow into a hole.
• Heavy engineered polyester uses thicker strands and denser construction, which is how some brands advertise load capacities up to 70 kg on a polyester product. The clarity drops slightly, the strength rises substantially. Clario's mesh is in this engineered-polyester category, and it's the same category as the polyester option on our 70+ kg Pro.
• PVC-coated polyester, better known as pet mesh, takes the same fibre and seals every strand in a PVC jacket, with heat-fused joints that stop a nick from spreading into a tear. This is the claw-focused version of polyester, and it's why pet mesh is our standard pairing for active cats on the Pro.

So when a booth or a website says "polyester mesh, safe for pets", the next question is always: which grade?

The load rating belongs to the system, not the fabric

Here's the part most marketing skips: a mesh fabric alone doesn't have a meaningful load rating. The number describes the whole installed system, meaning the fabric, the frame, and the fixing to your wall. A strong weave in a flimsy frame fails at the frame; a strong frame attached with weak adhesive fails at the wall.

That's why the same question ("can it hold my cat?") has to be answered with a system rating: 50+ kg as the baseline for homes with cats, 70+ kg for active cats. A leaping or falling cat applies several times its body weight for a split second. Think of the difference between placing a 5 kg bag on a table and dropping it from shoulder height. Where polyester wins, and where it doesn't

Choose polyester (standard, uncoated) when your problem is insects and your pets are chill. Nothing beats its combination of clarity and airflow. Windows without cats, like kitchens, service yards and high louvres, are polyester territory.

Think harder when a cat uses that window daily. Scratching is the enemy that finds polyester's weakness over months, not minutes. For daily claw contact you want either stainless steel 316, which is strong, highly transparent, corrosion-resistant in our climate, and the default on our Core, or pet mesh, which trades some clarity for the best claw resistance in the range.

Just confirm the rating applies to the installed system for your window size, and remember that load rating and scratch resistance are separate questions: one is about a single impact, the other about years of daily claws.

What's the difference between polyester mesh and pet mesh?

Pet mesh is polyester, but with each strand sealed in a PVC coating and joints heat-fused so damage can't spread. Think of it as polyester with a protective jacket on: less transparent, moderately less airflow, far more resistant to claws.
