Invisible Window Mesh in Singapore: What It Actually Is and How to Choose

What 'invisible' window mesh really means, how it differs from invisible grilles, which brands sell it in Singapore, and how to compare your options.

"Invisible window mesh" is one of the fastest-growing search terms in Singapore home improvement, driven by brands like Clario going viral with it. But the term causes real confusion, because Singapore already had a completely different product called an "invisible grille", and the two get mixed up constantly.

Here's what each one actually is, how "invisible" mesh works, and how to choose between the brands selling it.

Invisible mesh vs invisible grille: not the same thing

An invisible grille is a set of thin stainless steel cables tensioned across your window opening, spaced a few centimetres apart. It's a fall-prevention product: it stops a person (mainly a child) from going through the opening. It does nothing about insects, and small kittens can squeeze between the cables.

Invisible window mesh is a fine woven screen, a continuous sheet with no gaps. It blocks mosquitoes and other insects, and in cat-safe versions it also stops paws, claws and falls. "Invisible" here is marketing language for "transparent enough that you barely notice it".

If you're deciding between the two for a home with cats, we've written a separate comparison of invisible grilles vs window mesh for cat owners.

How can a mesh be "invisible"?

No mesh is literally invisible, since it's still a physical screen. What the marketing term describes is high transparency, which comes from two things: thin strands, and a weave that's dense enough to stop insects but open enough to let light and air through.

Two materials do this particularly well.

  • Polyester. Thin, uniform strands with high clarity. This is the material behind most "invisible" branded mesh in Singapore, including Clario's, and it's what we use on our polyester mesh option. Standard polyester is an insect-grade material; some brands engineer heavier polyester weaves for higher load ratings.
  • Stainless steel 316. Fine woven steel wire that stays highly transparent while adding real scratch resistance, which is why it's our default pairing on the Core for homes with cats. Grade 316 also resists corrosion in Singapore's humid, salty air, so the clarity lasts. See our stainless steel 316 mesh page for details.

The practical difference: if your only enemy is mosquitoes, clear polyester is the value pick. If a cat will be pressing its face and paws against the screen daily, 316 gives you the clarity without the fragility.

Which brands sell invisible mesh in Singapore?

The term is most associated with Clario, whose high-transparency polyester mesh went viral and is now a fixture at baby fairs and pet expos. Luxus sells its retractable mesh under the same "invisible mesh" label, with polyester and stainless steel options. But high-transparency mesh is not exclusive to any one brand. MeshMates, Magic Cat Mesh, BlindNet and Irusu all offer fine-weave mesh products with different materials, frames and formats, and we've compared them in our best window mesh in Singapore roundup.

The takeaway: don't shop for the word "invisible". Shop for transparency, material and load rating. Those are the things that actually differ between brands.

How to compare invisible mesh options

Quotes depend on your window sizes, the mesh material and the frame model far more than on brand slogans, and most brands quote per package after seeing your windows. So the only fair comparison is like for like: the same list of openings, the same mesh grade, and the same accessories on every quote. Get at least two before committing, and ask each provider how their load rating and material hold up against your particular cat and windows.

Frequently asked questions

Is invisible mesh strong enough for cats?

It depends on the material and the whole system, not the transparency. For cats, look for a load rating of 50+ kg (70+ kg for active cats) and a claw-resistant material like stainless steel 316 or PVC-coated pet mesh. A beautifully clear insect mesh with a low load rating is not a cat-safety product. Our guide to the strongest window mesh explains the ratings.

Does invisible mesh block mosquitoes?

Yes, that's its core job. A weave density of around 20×20 to 24×24 stops mosquitoes and most midges. We've covered exactly which bugs each weave stops separately.

Can invisible mesh be installed without drilling?

Ours can. Our standard installation uses specialised adhesive tape and silicone, with no holes in your walls or frames. Installation methods vary by brand, so ask before booking.
